You Can't Go Back TO the 80's.

I stopped by a "Happy Hour" that was promoted on Craig's List. It was a chance to meet new people and have a few drinks. It started at 5 and I strolled in at about 5:40. There seemed to be two tables of about 20 people in the bar. It would be difficult to find 20 uglier people together in the same room anywhere.

I had low expectations, and the gathering was promoted as "Do you remember the eighties?", which I remember as a fun decade, when people did have drinks after work. I'm really not superficial, but the women were all 30-50 lbs overweight, dressed badly, and absolutely torn up, and the men were worse, paunchy, and unshaven, with stringy white hair. I stayed at the bar for a minute, and pretended I hadn't come for the Happy Hour. Then I beat a quick retreat. I'm sorry, but I hope some of you understand the horror I felt.

Sounds like LJ get togethers!

The eighties ?

A generation of losers.

I was in the UK, and it was "Thatcher(/Reagan) a-go-go".

The poor were (really) poor and the rich were insufferable.

People who were educated during that period probably don't even realise that the universe could be otherwise.

It was all beatboxes and heavy drugs. Ugh !

They liked Annie Lennox because of her haircut !

LOL ! (And what about the voice ?)

Beam me up, Spotty.

Actually I liked the eighties...

But I didn't feel 'in tune with the times'. Au contraire !

The 'rampant' conservatism - fucking 'yuppies' - and the lousy political landscape depressed me somewhat. Bush promises to take this even further into unchartered territory. Please try not to re-elect him.

It's not the Eurythmics who sucked all that much. Wanna know what sucked ? Check out Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, Bananarama. On the other hand, Maze, Freddy Jackson, Luther Vandross, even Miles during that period...

Hey ! Remember those ditzy women with the power-shoulder-enhancers ? The 'designer stubble' ?

It's all so comic now.

I have to confess, I did wear fancy track suits and rode on a mountain bike.

wow

that sounds really pathetic. And I thought Craig's list was supposed to be hip.
