Running In The Boonies.

Pogi had a good run this morning, going out so far I could barely see him. Halo stayed closer to me, but he was also watching Pogi, so I was able to follow Halo's gaze to locate Pogi. I waved my arms and called, and Pogi came back quickly, and when I praised him, Halo also wanted to be called back and praised.

The two dog's natures' are so different. Pogi has prey drive, and races off to go hunting, but Halo has guarding instinct and watches the both of us. Halo also loves to be directed from afar. I believe him to be the old-fashioned type of Aussie, from working lines. He's bigger than most, right at the upper limit for size, and not flashy or visually colorful. The Australian Shepherds for show have diverged so much from the original working type that some people don't even recognize Halo as one.

When we passed coyote country, just across the canal, a big German Shepherd barked at us. Is it living with the coyotes out there? It melted back into the brush after a few seconds. All I can do is check Craigslist, and inevitably it seems than no one is looking for their dog.

Heating Up

Baby Roma Tomatoes

Hot weather is here. Today's forecast high will be 96F, and I spent 1-1/2 hours this morning in the sun, burying gopher cages in the south bed. Tomorrow, I'll finish with the cages, and then I'll set up drip irrigation, and then finally, I can transplant my little Roma tomato plants.

I'm going to put in these 15 Roma tomato plants, which are sauce tomatoes and good for canning, and later, two Brandywine tomato plants, which are more of salad tomatoes.
