Attack Of The Unknown

Something may have bit or stung the dog a few times on yesterday's walk. He was off the leash, in the wildest area, and came back and laid down, seemingly in distress. We came right home, and he came right inside and spent about five hours restless and agitated. I looked up rattlesnake bite symptoms, which he didn't have, and he wasn't bleeding or swelling, and he let me carefully touch the areas that were bothering him.

He's fine this morning, and later today, we'll go back over there and try to figure out what's up.

I hope he'll be all right. Did he have no marks on him? Or a site that he kept fussing at, where something might have stung or bitten him?

He has very thick fur, and won't let me do a detailed examination. I don't see anything obvious, and he'll let me gently touch the area, and I can't detect any swelling. He seems fine now, and maybe when I go look around, I'll find a hornet's nest or a gopher snake.

That sucks. I'm glad he's feeling better.

I'm not sure if I could have found him a vet on Sunday night. If it was a gopher snake, maybe he's now learned to stay clear of snakes.

I hate when the cat is sick or favors one leg. You feel for him, but there's not much to do except wait it out.

My old cat died of kidney failure last year, and in the final six months I was giving her fluids through a needle. She had a good quality of life, and when she absolutely folded in October, I took her in for that final injection.
