Death in the Afternoon.
Oct. 10th, 2001 10:19 pmI was running on the beach, and noticed strange scuttling tracks in the sand, leading up from the ocean. I stopped running, and followed the tracks about 50 feet up the slope of the beach to a large sea lion. He was about 10 feet long and perhaps 1000 lbs. Huge chunks of flesh had been ripped from his lower underside and his eyes were still open and moist. I watched from a distance for a few minutes, but he never moved. He had struggled to shore and died on dry land. Somewhere offshore, a Great White Shark must be still searching for the one that got away.
