Ghost Story
Sep. 8th, 2001 01:02 amOnce I lived in an old house in Hayward. It had been converted into separate apartments, and I lived on the top floor. Soon after I moved in, the guy downstairs stopped me in the morning, as I was leaving for work. He asked my why I was pacing up there during the day. He worked nights and the pacing made it hard for him to sleep.I told him I worked during the day, and no one was up there pacing. I sort of wrote him off as a nut. Later, I got to know him, and was down in his place when the pacing started. You could follow the sound of steps from upstairs as they moved from room to room, through doorways, into the kitchen, then the living room. We ran up to my place in about 10 seconds, and I unlocked the door and we went in. No one was there.
In retrospect, I think it was his place, the bottom apartment, that was haunted. I am sensitive to paranormal activities, and never felt any weirdness in my place, with one exception: I hung new curtains in two windows, and when I came home the next day the curtains and rods were off the windows and on the floor. I put them back up right away, and they stayed up after that. I also got two cats after I moved in and they never gave me any indication that they sensed any goofy stuff.
The guy downstairs told me that he also would hear steps going up the stairway at night. Not the stairs that were built on the outside of the house, that I used to get to my apartment, but the stairs that used to exist, inside the house, and had been torn out years before.
We talked to the landlord about the history of the house, and he told us that that it once was owned by a married couple that didn't get along. They separated after years of marriage, but not in the conventional sense. The husband separated the house, and lived upstairs, in my apartment, while his estranged wife lived downstairs. They lived that way, until the end, separated, but in the same house, never speaking. It could be that the wife was listening for years to her husband's footsteps, and echoes of them still remain .
