Sunday, Sordid Sunday
Mar. 10th, 2003 10:01 pmI was driving south on Sunday morning from Incline Village, along the shore of Lake Tahoe, and stopped for breakfast at a shabby little casino. The Cal-Neva Lodge lies exactly on the border and was literally was my last chance for Nevada style gaming.
There were cheesy framed photographs on the walls, and I realized that this was the club owned by Frank Sinatra in the 60's. The whole rat pack was there. This was the place that Marilyn Monroe did both JFK and Bobby Kennedy. I went on the tunnel tour, and was shown the secret tunnels that Sinatra had dug, to allow celebrities to pass unnoticed between the casino and the bungalows.
Marilyn partied in bungalow 5, and legend has it that she also OD'ed there. Quick work by a casino doctor saved her, but she died a week later from another overdose in Los Angeles. Sinatra sold it after his Nevada Gaming License was revoked because his association with the Mob. Sam Giancana was known to be the boss of the Chicago Syndicate and a regular at the Cal-Neva, when the McGuire Sisters were performing.
Even though it's ratty and run down, it's all still there.
