Our local Home Depot has self-service checkouts, where you scan your purchases and pay for them without human assistance. It's very sophisticated, with automated voices and sensors that know if you move something to the bagging area without scanning it. The funny thing is that a melodious female voice prompts you through the process, but a stern male voice pops up, if you do something wrong.

I was waiting for someone at the international arrivals gate at SFO for almost two hours last night. I always get there too early, but it's a fascinating place to watch people. Cute euro-girls are coming in on Lufthansa, in cool and trendy fashions. It breaks my heart when no one is there to meet them. Two girls arrived together and one rushed ahead to the other side of the rope, and then turned around and hugged her friend, as if to welcome her to the US. The flight attendants for China and Singapore Airlines are all beauty queens. There's no political correctness or equal opportunity there...they must be gorgeous. Two Sikh men from India sat next to me, and had so much body odor that I had to move. Chinese men are walking 5 paces ahead of their wives, oblivious to them, without a backward glance, as the poor women are struggling to keep up. Swarthy, Middle-Eastern men with a five day growth of beard, are arriving in shapeless, badly cut, black suits.
