Mar. 7th, 2004 09:43 pmI remember a time when strangers who really needed help could get it, but now, the grifters and scamsters we all run into have poisoned the waters, and made our society cold and heartless.
A young woman stopped me in a parking lot, and told me the saddest story about her mother dying of multiple sclerosis recently, and how she's struggling to take care of her sister, and she's is working 3 jobs, but they just got evicted from their motel room and none of the social service agencies or churches will help them.
I gave her $10, just in case this horrible situation is real. I've decided that it's about 60/40 that the story is phony, but she pushed the right buttons with me.
