Beach Culture
Jun. 2nd, 2004 08:06 pmLast weekend, I played on the beach in Ft Lauderdale and Hollywood Beach, Florida, and couldn't help but notice the out of shape middle-aged people with dark leathery skins, wearing skimpy suits, and slathering on the tanning oil. I didn't realize people still did that.
I go out in the sun regularly, and get sort of tan in the summer, but wear a minimum of SPF15 sunscreen. I had skin cancer about 15 years ago, but assume it was from too much sun exposure as a kid.
When I was little, generally I would wear only shorts in the summer. I would get as dark as an Indian. My feet would always be bare, and in the fall, when I put back on my shoes for school, the calluses on my feet would peel off.
