After riding my bike umpteen times in Baylands park, I have finally found the secret gate that provides access to the San Francisco Bay trail. Today was hot, and lots of little snakes were sunning themselves on the trail. This is good, as it kept me alert. I have to continuously scan the trail ahead to avoid running over them. They are non-poisonous, but I'm not sure what sort of snakes they are. Maybe garter snakes. Large crows (ravens?) abound, and I'm sure, given the chance, they would eat these snakelets, which are less than a foot long, and maybe a half inch in diameter. There are egrets and pelicans also, and sometimes I happen upon ducks hidden the cattails, sleeping with their heads tucked under their wings. Little burrowing ground squirrels sometimes run along side me. I'm the only person there, as I've checked my tire tracks to confirm that the old tracks were indeed mine. Only mine.
