True Stories Of The Past
Jul. 11th, 2005 10:43 pmAs my dad gets older, he seems to talk more of the past. Last Sunday, he came out with two more good stories:
It seems that when he was in his teens, every so often, he would take off into the woods to collect some sort of medicinal bark. He would hike out for a few days and gather it, then soak it in a stream before he sold it to the man in town. It was sold by weight, and the water would make the bark heavy, and worth more.
Not too much later, he served during WWII with the US Army in Europe, and remembers that when the American POW's were liberated from the German camps, they stole every sort of vehicle they could, and raced across Europe towards the French Riviera. My dad was active duty, and says these guys would only stop for food and gasoline, which the Army would give them. The freed POW's had had enough of grim prison life, and now no one would deny them anything.
