I was just reading about African leopards and zebras in another livejournal, and thought I'd mention the game trail that runs through my girlfriend's neighborhood. It's called the Hetch Hetchy corridor and is two strips of wild land, each about 50 yards wide, that leads from the bay to the Sierra mountains in the east. The land is kept open for a chain of transmission towers and powerlines that bring electricity into the Bay Area.

I've seen lots of deer running through, and about 5 years ago, a mountain lion was sighted, no doubt attracted by the deer.

This is where I always walk my gf's little 8 lb Pomeranian dog. He loves to walk, and has an outstanding sense of smell. He's picks up scents and then wants to track unknown beasties. This time of year, the frogs are croaking like crazy down there, and one night recently, something growled at us from out of the gully. The dog stopped and would not go further. I could make out some sort of animals in the moonlight, on the hill nearby, and rationalized that the 'growl" was a cow sound, but in the morning I saw horses, not cows, on the hill.

When we go walking, the dog and I, we always think wild and primeval thoughts, and are ready for any sort of confrontation. It's rare to actually see a mountain lion because they're so stealthy.
