I bought a kiln, a slip mixer and two pouring tables. The first thing is to set up the kiln, so I just had an electrician over, and he'll install a breaker and a 240v/50amp plug for me this weekend. The next thing is to test the elements and replace any that are bad.

I had to buy a new tool, a digital multimeter that could measure resistance in the proper range. My old meter is for electronics and wouldn't work for this. All the elements tested OK, but one is physically broken, so I will try to get the replacement today. The electrician is a little flaky, and hasn't come over yet. With a little luck everything will be done today, so I can test fire the kiln.

The electrician installed the outlet, but it only supplies 208V. The low voltage, he says, is the fault of the power company. The kiln element that I need has to be purchased from the manufacturer.
****************************************************************************
Aaargh! All the electrical work has to be done over. It turns out that we have 208V power here, even though the panel box and outside box are labeled 220V and 240V. To achieve proper temperature, the kiln needs all the 240V elements replaced with the 208V variety, and then it has to be wired directly to a 60 amp circuit breaker instead of being plugged into a wall socket.
