Upgraded Security
Dec. 1st, 2009 04:53 pmI installed a Grade 1 deadbolt on the front door, and brought the remaining four locks to a locksmith, who keyed them alike for $50. All my exterior doors now open with the same key. I'm a little proud of myself for taking out and reinstalling all the locks myself, but once I got into it, I realized there was really only one way the lock mechanism could go back in, so it was pretty straight forward. I also gained an appreciation for the sophisticated elegance of lock design. It's better now to have Schlage locks throughout rather than Kwikset. The Schlage locks with extra plates and barriers are said to be harder to pick or bump, thus designed to frustrate any bad guys that could someday try to break in.
One last thing, is that a lock that I replaced was a generic realtor lock, and I could probably get into a lot of listed houses with it's key. Not that I ever would try, I really don't have much larceny left in my heart. Most petty criminals are stupid, and risk freedom for things of little value.
