Agricultural Update
Feb. 19th, 2010 12:30 pmOne of the unknown trees in the side yard has blossomed, and now it seems that it's a cherry tree. It's pretty large, and predates the house. This is an agricultural area, with cherry orchards all around, so chances are that it's an edible variety.
I wacked the weeds and tall grass between the fence and the road. It took me about 2 hours and I wanted to finish early in case it rained. I found a big metal safe that had been dumped in the weeds. Someone had spend time sawing and drilling into it, and eventually they managed to remove the door. One of those metal salvagers wanted it for scrap, and it took the both of us to lift it into his truck. Now that that area is clear, I'm going to try and mow it regularly rather than going at it with the weed wacker.

I did more yard work today, and now I'm thinking about planting some avocado trees in the side yard. I'm going to use the change my Dad left in his truck, in part, to by two trees, one "A" and one "B" variety. With the existing lemon and cherry tree and some avocado trees and maybe a few tomato plants, I'll be able to get my agriculture on without planting a labor intensive vegetable garden. Three big garden jobs that I already have on the list are pruning 4 big trees, and then putting in a irrigation system and replanting the lawn. I'm reading about netting the cherry tree to protect it from the birds, and that alone will be a challenge as it's large. Some people build frames from pvc pipe to stretch the netting across, and you have to close the bottom as well as the birds are clever. They can strip a tree in a matter of hours.
I made some good beer a few years ago with Ranier cherries, so maybe my own cherry stout is something in my future.
