Farm Update For January 13
Jan. 13th, 2011 09:41 amAnother gloomy day, both rain and a washing machine expected soon. I know a Mexican gardener who keeps his pepper plants rooted over the winter. In Mexico, the climate is such that a pepper plant is perennial. I'm trying that now with an Anaheim pepper plant, which is getting more forlorn with every freeze, but we'll see if it lasts until spring, and how it produces next year. I also found out that onions only flower and go to seed in their second season. I still have lots of scallions that were planted last year, and it will be interesting to see if they go to seed later this year. I save seeds and expect to plant a dozen jalapeno plants this spring. I hope to grow enough hot peppers for the entire year.
I'm eating lots of the squash and tomatoes that I put away this summer and fall, and still have fresh scallions and lettuce coming out of the garden.
