Farm Update April 3
Apr. 3rd, 2011 02:10 pmMy battered body was ready for some hard work, so I moved and consolidated all my compost piles. I started with seven in the fall, and I've used some and now I'm left with three big piles.
I have enough finished compost for my immediate needs, and turning and moving the rest will help it break down.
My almond tree is setting fruit, and it looks like I did get a strong pollination. The last group of broccoli has just developed little crowns. When the broccoli is harvested, I'll put eggplant in that spot.
I'm happy to see that the lawn patching is successful, and the dog has stopped tearing up the lawn. He's got more freedom now; not only do we do 2 walks a day, but I often let him out past the fence where he gets his run on. He's very active, and he now probably has enough interesting interludes to keep him from being bored and destructive.
Neighborhood dogs have been wandering by, and he likes that, but a huge Lab showed up that was twice the size of Halo. I could tell Halo was intimidated at first, but Halo is fast and agile, and could literally run circles around the other dog. They played for a while, and the Lab even came in the gate and spent 15 minutes in the yard. After 15 minutes Halo decided to move the big Lab along, so gave him little herding nips on the backside; steering the big dog through the gate, and out of his yard.
