Garden Update April 6
Apr. 6th, 2012 04:48 pmThe video tape streamers seems to be working. I'm seeing magpies cruising by, but they haven't been landing in the almond tree. There are scads of fat green almonds; they must look scumptious to the birds. The onions that were planted as sets have already begun to develop flowers. I'm going to dig up the red onions before they flower, because I want to collect pure yellow onion seed, later in the season. It's a little silly to go through the effort of collecting seed, when you can buy it, but it's a fun exercise, and will be a good skill in post-apocalyptic America. I'm almost finished harvesting the winter broccoli, but there are six small broccoli plants for later.
The lemon tree is beginning to bud again, and the avocado trees have tiny new leaves, about the size of a penny. I need to prepare and fence off a new garden bed, a fourth bed, for tomatoes. This year I want lots of tomatoes.
