I replaced three of the sorriest eggplant starters with yellow watermelon starter plants from Home Depot. I waited until late afternoon, when the sun is less harsh, and put them out in the south bed. I chose the variety that matures the fastest, it being July already.

Last night, I sprayed all the eggplant with neem oil, for the third time. A number of them look have leaf damage, but are developing flowers, and should bear fruit.
I wouldn't be a real farmer if everything that I popped into the soil grew without problems. For me, part of the allure of gardening is connecting with past generations, and working to bring in the crops, in spite of adversity. That's why I was recently a little ashamed to be running out of vegetables to eat. It worked out, and the beans are coming in, just as I'm eating the last peas and broccoli. I was watching a PBS series about the history of England, where they were describing medieval farmers, growing vegetables around their houses. They even had plots of native plants, such as wormwood, so they had something to eat, if all else failed.
