Farm Update July 27
Jul. 27th, 2012 10:30 amHalo used the "I want food" gesture to tell me that he wanted fresh water outside.
I'm learning the sun pattern of the new south bed, and a big spot is gloriously sunny, but two edges are not so sunny. The best sun comes from the east in late morning, and the late afternoon western sunlight probably doesn't do much for the plants. The eggplant is flowering, so I won't try the diatomaceous earth, until maybe next season. I'll continue spraying with neem oil.
I had to fight off a number of magpies yesterday, and maybe they've learned a lesson. The doves seem happy with my anti-crow and magpie efforts, I think the crows were eating their babies. I'm slowly learning about birds, but I've got lots of spiders around that I'd like to identify. One has built a huge, complex web over the north bed, with guy-wires stretching eight feet, from the almond tree to the nopoles cactus. Almost all spiders are venomous, but some have venom that doesn't harm humans, and others can't pierce human skin to inject the venom. For my own safety, I need to start looking closer to see if I have black widows or those violin/recluse spiders.
