Life On The Ranch
Oct. 25th, 2013 09:57 pmI'm reading a western now, but it has too much of a modern sensibility, which grates on my nerves. One of the sub-plots even has a character looking for her "birth mother". The author uses that term in a novel set in Texas of the 1890's. I'm not committed to finishing it, and if it gets more historically ridiculous, that's it.
One odd thing, happening in the real world, is that the feral chickens are watching us. I kid you not. For the last 3 days, they're in the yard when we come back from our walk. They seem to notice when we leave, and then cross the road and two fences to get here. I think they feast on bugs, but maybe they also drink the dog's water. A few days ago, Pogi killed a chicken in another wild flock. Both dogs quickly chase this neighboring flock out of the yard, and Pogi once grabbed a mouthful of feathers, but hasn't killed one of them yet.
Pogi's crazy about hunting, and isn't minding me well off leash. He's always following scent trails and looking for rabbits. He literally looses his mind when he's in hot pursuit. Border Collies are wacky dogs, and often develop weird obsessions. My plan is to always keep him closer when he's off leash, close enough that he'll mind me. I may even put him back on leash in certain areas until he accepts the limits of where he can go.
