The State Of California recently revoked the operating permit of a nursing home, and the owners and managers and most of the staff simply left, even though about two dozen patients remained. A cook and janitor were among the few staff left, all working without pay, desperately calling 911 for days on end, and doing their best to care for patients.
State regulators were in the facility, watching the chaos, and at one point, even told Rowland, the cook, that the institution would be fined $3800 for operating without a license.
After about 40 hours of desperate pleas by the cook and janitor, the 911 paramedics finally evacuated the patients to other facilities.
