We're going directly from mild weather to bitter cold on Wednesday. I have a checklist of gardening chores to prepare, and the final harvest will be Monday. The last tomato plant and one pepper plant will be uprooted and hung upside down in the garage. Supposedly, the fruit, still on the plant, and away from the frost, will slowly ripen.

All the winter squash will also be cut and stored in the garage.

On Tuesday, I'll get out all the tarps and covers and lights to keep the lemon and avocado tree from freezing. The two plum trees are OK with cold weather, in fact they need a certain number of "chill hours" in order to fruit.

The winter garden in up, the last two things to come up were garlic and green bunching onions. I guess they have had a good start during this mild weather, and will be fine in the cold.

Two cowboys came by the house on horses, and stopped for the longest time, right outside the fence to make a phone call. The dogs barked and barked, but Pogi didn't try to jump the fence. Halo was getting disturbed and anxious because they stopped and stayed there, rather than just riding by. Halo punctuated his barking jags with ripping huge chunks of the lawn up with his teeth. Hopefully, it was a learning experience for the dogs, and they will realize that horses and riders are not a threat. They both behaved well, considering that a pitbull down the street will jump the fence and attack a horse and rider.
