Most of the US and Filipino Infantry were facing Japanese troops along a front that stretched across the central part of the peninsula.

The Japanese attempted to flank these troops by staging an amphibious landing behind allied lines.
They were stopped by what they considered elite US suicide troops wearing brightly colored uniforms. Troops that showed no fear of death, that would talk in loud voices and stand in clearings to fight them.

What the Japanese didn't realize is that these were sailors, who had dyed their white uniforms with coffee grounds, and had no infantry training. They were able to stop the Japanese advance, and after about two days were relieved by experienced troops that pushed the Japanese back to the beaches where they were defeated by an offshore navy mine clearing vessel firing 3" guns.
