Thomas Jefferson
Feb. 9th, 2014 01:02 pmI've started reading the biography "Thomas Jefferson, The Art Of Power", and because it's a modern biography the author is touching on slavery, and described a court case Jefferson brought to decide when a mulatto slave that was the son of a white man should be freed. I didn't realize this, but apparently the Virginia case law at the time was that he should be free at age 31, but Jefferson argues in court for an immediate emancipation.
The author is also introducing Sally Hemings, who was the slave half-sister of Jefferson's wife.
Her mother was the daughter of a British sea-captain named Hemings, and an African woman.
