Quick End To A Bad Novel

I stopped reading that British crime novel by Ian Rankin. The breaking point was a conversation between two oafish American characters, who were using British words like "engaged" for 'busy". It's a thoroughly artless piece of writing, and I realized, 1/3 through the thing, that I didn't care about the story.
