Incidental Nature Preserve
Jul. 8th, 2022 10:06 amThe county requires me to keep up a strip of land alongside the road. It has to be mowed and cleared of trash. This morning I did that, and this might the last time, until the rains start in the fall.
The ground squirrels, from across the road, are digging tunnels there that go under the fence and into my yard. I think they come at night, to eat vegetation and drink water from the dog's dish. Dinah would love to catch one.
I also noticed smaller holes out on that strip, that are gopher holes. Dinah does catch gophers occasionally. I discovered a big excavation in my compost pile, probably made by a possum hunting insects. A neighbor's cat often hangs out in the shady spots.
There is a patch of morning glories there, as well. They are sort of a rare wild flower. I never mow them, and they get some water when I water a stand of junipers right at the property line.
