I got caught in an impossible two hour traffic jam, and found out later that a big rig had mixed it up with a minivan, and a 9 year old girl had been killed. In a fatal accident, the cops always just stop traffic and wait for the coroner. I eventually got off the freeway and around the accident scene via the side roads, but it was an epic jam, and after I had gotten through, the radio reported that freeway traffic was still stopped.
