robbyI just looked at the 1940 census, and while I never found the enumeration district for my neighborhood, I found some that were close by. The pages first listed the people living in houses, but the last ten pages were men coded T (transient?). These men were from all over the country, and the world. Some were quite old, but I think they were fruit bums and seasonal agricultural workers. The US was still in a depression, and these were the guys that Steinbeck wrote about.

I've found the census data, but for some reason the basic street names may or may not be written down, and the numbers are always sequential ie: 523, 524, 525...and these numbers are not the modern address. I found a house that stands a block away, because the guy was a grocer, and his store, painted with his name, is still standing next to the house.
