I couldn't resist turning the soil over today in the now-empty west bed. Snow peas could go in now, and they would improve the soil. I haven't finished shelling almonds, and I may not worry about almonds next year. The whole process just takes so much time and bother, and you're left with 5 pounds of nuts to show for it.
In pre-industrial times, with limited food choices, it would be worthwhile to go through it all. I see the oaks also dropping their acorns now, and in the past, they were an important resource. Someday I might gather and process some. There could be bedrock mortars, from the old days, down by the creek.
