A Maryland organ transplant recipient has died of rabies, contracted from the organ donor. It was a sort of rabies associated with raccoons, but it developed a year after the transplant, which is far longer than rabies usually incubates. This episode may may have resulted from the battery of anti-rejection and immune-blocking drugs associated with transplants.
