I thought I had disabled flash a week ago, but was still seeing intrusive auto-run video ads. I delved deeper into the control pages and saw a single meek little asterisk hiding in a list of pages allowed to control flash.

This little * is a default that ALLOWS (even if flash is disabled) any and every ass-bite advertiser to waste my time and system resources. I deleted it, and I'm now free of flash ads.

Why not just uninstall it?

There may be a time when I need flash. Almost all internet video runs with it, but I'm tired of being bombarded with auto-run videos. I can now browse the internet quickly, I haven't had a web page hang. .

I think it's telling that Microsoft makes it hard to disable. They love an internet where they control your browser, and make you watch dozens of video ads.

I don't know what I've done but I don't get them.

I do have Spybot S&D installed and use the functions in CCleaner to remove some programs from the start menu. I have the programs still but they don't run unless I invoke them. Way back I installed Adblock which seemed to do the trick even after I uninstalled it.
