I did productive things all weekend, and now it's 11:20 on Sunday night and I'm exhausted and drinking Filipino gin and tonics. I just finished starting a five gallon batch of Munich style lager, and have the wort cooling in a mini-fridge. It will be cold-brewed. I am having fun brewing beer, and the differences between making beer and wine are interesting. What if I started experimenting by merging techniques, and making a fruit beer? Has anyone ever tried this? I have tasted some of the new flavored sakes and they are this sort of hybrid, as is Smirnoff ice. I have a recipe for a beer brewed with cherries, and perhaps I'll try that.

Filipino gin is made from sugar cane and is ridiculously cheap in the Philippines. When I was there I bought a case for a party, and when I paid the equivalent of 50 cents/bottle, I was suspicious. They call it Ginebra, but it's real gin. It's untaxed because the powerful families that make the stuff control the Government.

I still can't find my beer book...

I might go to a beer tasting/seminar thingee happening soon here. Maybe I'll learn something. You seem like you've really got it down to a science.

I tried the Sam Adams Cherry Wheat and I love that beer. The cherry flavor goes great with it.

I like beer and winemaking, and have some aptitude. I've always been a good cook, and liked chemistry in college. It's better for society that I play with this, rather then make crystal meth. I could set up a little lab with my hydrometers and thermometers and filter pumps and glass carboys. I have some short and simple brewing recipes and instructions that I could fax or e-mail to you. I might have an extra brewing book around, I'm doing spring cleaning and am amazed by the long-lost things I am finding, maybe the book will turn up.

My lager has not started to ferment yet, it might be too cold in the refrigerator, or the yeast is not as active as it should. The mini-fridge I'm using is new, and when I turn the temperature a notch warmer, it seems to get COLDER. I'm womdering if the temperature control dial is on backwards!!!

In Hawaii (or at least on the old island that I was visiting) Guava is a major fruit... now I'm not sure how it really qualifies for fruit... I think it's a vegetable... like the tomatoe... but whatever... while I was on the island we hit up a brewery/club and I was able to get this beer sampler... basically 15 variations of guava beer. maybe if I were a beer expert or someone with the refined taste buds I could have appreciated it... but I'm still developing my beer buds. I didn't really care for it but since you asked about mixing beer and fruit, yes, they do it in Hawaii (and I'm sure other places)...

I'm babbling... pity.

No, that is interesting. A lot of non-traditional malt beverages are hitting the market. Mango beer is a new one. Do you know if they actually brewed it with mangoes or added mango juice to finished beer?

ew if they just add juice to beer... even I know that sounds quite hideous.

I should hope they brew it or ferment it or whatever with the juice... ya know, from the beginning. (grin)
