The latest polls indicate that Grey Davis will be recalled and Arnold will be the next Governor of Cali-Fornia. I didn't vote for him, but disapproved of the scurrilous last-minute smear tactics by the Democrats, and their loyal newspapers, the LA Times and SF Chronicle. It's an eye opener to see campaigns get nasty. The power elite is openly playing hardball, and using all the propaganda tricks they have to confuse the electorate.

I think the 'nazi thing' is a cheapo jibe too.

My problem with Arnie is that he's a fucking moron (and a lousy actor), but whatever.

Just about everybody in Austria has at least an 'ambivalent' attitude about the nazis in any case.

We get the politicians we deserve, right ?

If you look at his record, Arnold always been unequivocally anti-nazi, even in his teenage years. It's an insult to the Austrian people to paint them with such a broad brush. And it cheapens the huge evil that was the Nazi movement to throw the word at everyone you don't like. It's true that his father was a nazi, but none of us can afford to be responsible for the sins of our fathers.

He'll be another Ronald Reagan, and he will have a group of experienced "advisors', including a previous Governor, whispering in his ear. He's not a moron in the general sense, in fact, by all accounts he's rather clever.

Hey ! Not so PC, dude !

Last time I was in Vienna the mother of my (then) girlfriend (austrian) told me so, and demonstrated its 'truth' (in cafés, in the street, among her neighbours). Between the wars the austrians were longing for someone to deliver the 'final blow' to the increasingly decadent and meanigless 'austro hungarian empire', and saw the arrival of Hitler's troops as a 'liberation', and still do, at least those who are old enough to remember it. Those who are not old enough just think Heiser is a nice guy - well, a majority of them do, anyway. Not everybody has a cool, relaxed california 'tude, dude ! Maybe not even Arnie. Only time will tell.

btw : I seriously doubt that Arnie is -as you say - 'rather clever'. If he was that he'd have answered more of the questions put to him during the run-up, instead of standing there like a stammering twat. What he is, is ambitious and courageous. I hope he'll prove to be a 'loose cannon' to the republicunts. His politics are incoherent. He'll (hopefully) react to what happens at gut level, and may eventually prove to be too 'soft' and 'liberal' for the hardliners.

Let's watch.

Good luck, californians.

I'm surprised he won. He did one debate, but I don't think he came across very well. Some pundits explain Arnold's popularity as a sign that people are disgusted with career politicians, and they hope that an outsider will go into office and shake the system up.

Arnold is a Republican, but not a social conservative, and he supports gay rights and abortion. He might not be as much of a puppet as Ronald Reagan was.

Yes, Gary Coleman promised he would represent the little guy in Sacramento.
