Malaria or Madness
Jul. 21st, 2004 10:36 pmIn spite of using good mosquito repellent in Palawan, I got bit a number of times. Here's a news story about how ineffective the older antimalarial drug chloroquine has become. To protect myself from malarial infection, before, during the trip and even now (for two more weeks), I'm dosing with the newer and more effective mefloquine (Larium).
The problem with my drug of choice, Larium, is that it sometimes triggers psychosis. Well, if I act out in the next few weeks, I hope you'll forgive me.
I ran into a local doctor over there, and he says the bad actor is really not malaria, but another mosquito borne illness called dengue. It's so terrible, I'm not even going to google it.
