In other news:
I got carded buying beer last night. When I laughed and told the cashier that I was older than she was, I realized that she hadn't even looked at me and still wouldn't look at me, even though I was talking to her. She was a very thin woman with a pinched, emotionless mask of a face. When I spoke she sort of recoiled, as if I was angry with her. I'm pretty intuitive and I got the feeling that she was very troubled and totally disconnected from life.
This morning my old dad was asking me about some of these crazy campaign commercials he's seen on TV. He is geared towards traditional political spots, and didn't understand what they meant to say. One was the Hilary spoof of The Sopranos, and I gather the other was the Obama Girl video. (He calls Obama the "colored" guy) I explained that they weren't really official campaign commercials made by the respective campaign staffs, but simply made by private individuals with computers at home and posted on the internet.
I told him one theory of advertising is that a spot doesn't have to make sense or even mean anything. It simply has to make an impression and be memorable. This made him mad.
"Bull!" he answered," Bull!"
