Saturday Morgan
Jul. 17th, 2010 11:34 amIn the middle of a heat wave, with fancy internet weather stations reporting 100+ degrees in the late afternoon. My little, low tech thermometer out by the garden reads lower. The bees are doing their business early in the morning. I pick squash about 6AM, because soon after many, many bees show up. Often there are more than one in each flower. I haven't been stung, but I really don't want to wade into that ocean of bees. There are 4 eggplant fruit forming, with what looks like many more to come. I planted the typical eggplant, with large dark purple fruit, but my girlfriend likes the more exotic varieties. Maybe next year.
I've staked and have been tying up the eggplant and tomatoes. As I've been tying up the heirloom tomatoes, I'm finding more fruit forming. Not a lot, but now some of the newer flowers that were hand pollinated, are turning back in such a way that makes me hope that they are also forming fruit. Time will tell.
