Gardening Update
Aug. 4th, 2010 12:44 pmI'm collecting my first few almonds, and they have a very pronounced flavor. I wonder if commercial almonds are processed somehow to make them taste milder. I can eat them, but they're much different from the ones you buy in a can.
The first few jalapeno peppers were mild, but now the jalapenos that are ripening are good and hot. Two peppers are enough to spice up a pot of chili, and I've also got an even hotter chili pepper plant putting out lots of peppers. The chili peppers aren't ripe yet, but are larger than the jalapeno peppers, and I was expecting tham to be smaller peppers.
I opened a jar of tomatoes that were canned 3 weeks ago and heard a satisfactory "whoosh" as the lid was opened. They tasted good, so my canning is proper, and I'll continue putting up the extra tomatoes. I have 4 plants that might be producing as late as November, but I'll keep canning, just like I'm freeze drying the yellow squash. It's a sin to waste food, and if there's a nuclear war, and I can fend off the mutants, I'll have plenty to eat.
