Farm Report For September 20.
Sep. 20th, 2010 02:58 pmI planted a row of broccoli this morning, and my first batch of cauliflower is up. I'm already eating lettuce planted August 10. The butterflies flutter by, but the honeybees have disappeared. The native bees (wasps and big black bumblebees) are still at work. I stopped by a real seed store today and bought some snowpeas and red and yellow onion seed to plant for this winter. I've never has a winter garden before, but the guy at the seed store helped me pick the right varieties and I'll follow a planting calendar that I found online.
The squash are fading, with slim pickings for me. I'll let it be for now, and maybe Indian Summer will bring a last hurrah. The tomatoes are still ripening, with probably a few more weeks of high yields. I've canned 34 quarts of tomatoes to date, and just picked up a dozen more empty jars.
