The dog usually wakes me up about 6AM, when the furnace comes on. He likes to guard out in the yard until it's daylight, and time for his walk. This morning, he was out there barking persistently, so I went out to check the situation. As I got over to him, an unknown something jumps out of a tree and into the yard, and he takes after it. It was probably one of the feral cats, and even though it jumped the wrong way, into the yard, I think it got away.

I don't like Halo going after cats, but it's in his nature to chase things. These cats are helping to control gophers, and I want to encourage them to stick around.

I sprayed the almond tree with copper, for fungus, and horticultural oil, for pests. Both sprays are organic and safe for fruit trees. I also painted the lower trunk, starting below ground level, with dilute white latex paint. The next job is to dig a large water basin around the tree and start flooding it every two weeks.

Everyone seems to have the same trees in the neighborhood, but on some lots, the trees are huge and terribly overgrown. A neighbor's almond tree is easily three times larger than mine, as is a stand of what I call privet trees. I've read the description of these trees, and thought that mine were approaching the maximum size, but no, these neighbors have the same trees, but staggeringly large.
