Urban Farming
Jun. 29th, 2012 02:17 pmThe internet is crowded with noble, idealistic sentiments. The idea of turning empty city lots into gardens to feed the poor and hungry is one of those. Gardening is hard work, and the return for labor is not very efficient.
Vegetable gardening is more of a middle class hobby, a labor of love. The fresh vegetables are wonderful, but honestly, there are great numbers of people that don't eat fresh food, and wouldn't want to waste their energy gardening. It's easier to buy fast food.
In a perfect world, you would have masses of people, clambering for the chance to work in the sun, and grow healthy food, but that's not happening in the here and now.
