I did my final large harvest of the almond tree, and put away the ladder. The best technique is to knock the nuts down with a long pole. It's fun, and somehow primal to harvest a tree. It's interesting how your brain and eyes suddenly shift into seeing the nuts up in the tree. It must be a primate ability, although the magpies surely have it, and they also watch me harvesting the nuts.

After all this work, I may get five pounds of shelled almonds, and they cannot be eaten raw. From a practical perspective, it's better to buy almonds at the store. The commercial trees are younger, and smaller, and all the harvesting and processing is done by machine.

In other news, something is now eating the squash, so I baited and set all the mice and rat traps.

There's something weird on and around at least two mouse traps...maybe lizards, perhaps eating insects attracted to the peanut butter bait. They are not moving, but the traps aren't sprung. I'm not in the mood to investigate further, and will look again tomorrow. I want to put an end to rodents, but didn't expect reptiles.
