Garden Update- Early Fall
Sep. 23rd, 2012 04:57 pmToday, I went out beyond the fence and whacked down the high grass. I found no snakes, for which I'm thankful. There were broken hen's eggs in the little stand of pine trees. I should thin out the pine seedlings this winter to about one per foot, and start cultivating them.
The front lawn is now mostly bermuda grass, which is wild in this area. It's really thick and lush, and takes a pounding from the dogs, who love their front lawn.
The section that I reclaimed in the north, out by the road, is now, also a thick, beautiful bermuda grass lawn. If you water an area, Bermuda grass will come, and choke out everything else.
I'm getting a steady tomato harvest, but not a bumper crop. I think my new south bed might need a few years of cultivation before it bears as heavily as the other three beds. I sprayed the winter squash again for powdery mildew, but the nine squash that are developing look fine as do the newest squash leaves.
