Garden Update October 7
Oct. 7th, 2012 05:09 pmI may have picked the last of the fresh beans, the plants are not flowering, and what's now left are pods drying out and going to seed. By the calender, the butternut squash will be ready soon, but I plan to leave them out, and then harvest right before first frost. The tomatoes, peppers and eggplant are still bearing.
I've been watering the Zutano avocado tree with filtered water, hoping it will renew itself and perk up before winter. The Stewart avocado looks pretty good, but my thought is that the Stewart is a brand new variety, with 50 more years of breeding development than the Zutano. My operating premise is that the hard well water is what's holding the avocados back. That's why I'm putting up a big rainwater storage tank- so I can irrigate the avocados next year with soft water.
I need to find time to plant peas, garlic and red onions.
