Farm Report for May 14
May. 14th, 2013 01:07 pmThe tomato plants are doing phenomenally well. After two weeks in the ground, they're twenty times larger and beginning to flower. The peppers and onions are also doing very well.
The eggplant were wilting, so I gave them an unscheduled watering. Something is also tearing huge holes in the leaves. They have the requisite little sucking insects, but something bigger is landing on them and snipping away. I broke down and carefully dusted them with Sevin, which is a non-organic insecticide. For the next few mornings, the lows are forecast to be below 55 F, so I'll need to cover the egglant at night.
The first planting of bush beans is coming up, and I pulled up the last of the peas. Once I build some tomato cages, I might next plant a row of pole beans.
I also have two "volunteer" squash plants. They sprouted in a convenient place, so I left them, and now they are almost ready to flower. They are likely butternut squash, but I won't know for sure until I see the fruit. Later, when the yellow onions are harvested, I'll plant the entire south bed with yellow and butternut squash.
