A Bad Morning For Rabbits
Aug. 11th, 2013 09:06 amWe found our first fresh rabbit in the road, near the beginning of the walk. Pogi picked it up and carried it along until he was off leash, and then he proceeded to split it open and eat the insides. He kept what was left as we headed for home. Then we found a second, even fatter rabbit, also dead in the road. I expected Halo to pick up this one, but no, Pogi dropped the first rabbit and took the second one. Halo got a chance to thoroughly investigate the gutted first rabbit, but wasn't that interested.
Pogi now has the second rabbit in the yard, where he's slowly and methodically eating it. Halo is interested, but is only lurking from a distance and watching Pogi with the prize.
When Pogi came in the house, Halo (the dominant dog) saw his chance and claimed the rabbit. He ate some of it, and then did a neat job of burying the rest, even scattering green grass over the excavation.
Then Pogi came out, and Halo came in. Pogi made a direct beeline to the rabbit and dug it up. Halo knew, even from inside the house, and went out and aggressively re-claimed it. He made Pogi drop it and chased him back into the house. Halo then settled down and ate most of it.
Late that afternoon, after the walk, Halo pulled out a final hidden piece of rabbit and chomped away for a while. He left the last bit of it on the ground for Pogi, moved away, and Pogi ate it while Halo was watching and smiling.
At this point, both dogs were happy, and the fat rabbit was only a memory.
