Rabbit Drama
Mar. 31st, 2014 10:40 amPogi brought home a freshly killed rabbit he found on the road, and he got the first chance at it.
Halo, who is the alpha dog, has it now, and he's buried and dug it up at least once. It's fine for the dogs to have fun, and exhibit dog behaviors, but I don't want any overt aggression over a dead rabbit.
Pogi is sulking inside the house, and Halo is laying on the lawn chewing on the carcass. My guess is that Halo will let Pogi have some of it later. If things get too weird, I'll throw what's left in the garbage.
Chapter 2
Halo has eaten the lower half, and has left the rest unguarded, so now Pogi has got it again. They are playing out instinctual pack rules without aggression or conflict. When we found Pogi, I could tell that Halo was a definite point of attraction for him, and Pogi seems to like having a dominant dog around.
Chapter 3
Halo just mixed it up with a skunk, but didn't get sprayed too badly. He is smart enough to have avoided the worst of it. Pogi, thankfully, was on a leash, because his crazy killer switch activated, and he would have fought the skunk to the death.
Epilogue
I'm appreciating Halo more every day. I can let him off leash, and he's smart enough to avoid skunks. Yesterday, he escaped with the barest trace of skunk and immediately circled back to me. He also shares rabbit meat with his sidekick. All in all, a smart and noble dog.
