The squash are budding now. I just gave them a feeding of 0-10-10 to encourage strong flowering, as I really want a good squash crop.

I make and use all the compost I can, but do sometimes supplement with chemical fertilizers. I grow hundreds of pounds of vegetables each year.

Years ago, I was in the [livejournal.com profile] gardening community, but there were too many political gardeners who were quick to offer bad advice to people. Often they really didn't grow anything, just talked on the internet.

One scenario was a woman who wanted to start a garden in Portland, OR, but her yard was choked with blackberry. Rather than discuss practical ways to quickly clear the area, people suggested that she rent goats (in the city!), and let them eat the blackberry plants. I think of this type as Hobbit people, living in a fantasy world of magick and thatched cottages.

My Japanese eggplant is not doing so well. I sprouted saved seeds, and had a terrible time with that, and now the exact same plants that were marginal seedlings are not thriving in the garden. About half are blooming, so I will get eggplant, but next year I'll buy my seed, as somehow I seem to have produced weak plants.
