Hunter S. Thompson

It's reported that Hunter S. Thompson has killed himself. I wonder if he was ill, or just despondent? I have read a number of his books, and while his style of Gonzo Journalism was amusing, when I heard him interviewed, he often seemed incoherent, a strange and terrible shambling wreck of a man.
