A flock of young feral chickens has appeared across the road, but I fear, not for long. Small, flightless birds are really a bad idea in this neighborhood. Halo ran across the road, waded into the weeds, and snatched one. There were already feral cats, as well, lurking on the sidelines. He's brought his grisly prize home, and is now rejoicing his good fortune on the front lawn.

I'm not pleased that he killed the chicken, but I had no idea they were out in that field, which his prime hunting range. He's a difficult breed to keep occupied, and one of his passions is hunting.

I'm glad he killed it and didn't tease as cats do with mice.

Something I've never understood about dogs is, owners are advised to be wary of feeding chicken because it might contain small bones on which the dog might choke. Yet dogs happily eat the whole carcases of chickens and other small prey, as yours just did.

He dispatches them in an instant. I'm amazed at all the complex instincts he has available to him. He caught a gopher about an hour later, which I encourage. When we're walking off leash, he's hunting, and when he picks up, and is following a strong scent, it's difficult to get his attention.

As for bones, I've heard that cooked bones are brittle and more dangerous than raw bones.
